Fall Happenings in the Art Room

Happy Fall to everyone!  All Golden Hill Eagles have been busy eagles exploring a variety of media in the art room.  Here's a photo gallery and brief explanation of what all our PAX Eagles have been learning.

Kindergarten:  PHEW!  Ask your littles about all the hard work their hands and fingers had to do to create these amazing paper bag Fall inspired trees.  We studied the parts of a tree and exhausted our finger muscles while twisting and TWISTING to create these lovely work of art!!!!

Here are a few pictures of our fall art lesson using materials from nature.  I introduced our Kindergartners to the artist Andrew Goldsworthy who creates art with and out in nature.

Students had the opportunity to leaf print and explore building a temporary piece of art with pieces of nature collected from the beach.

Grade One:  ROY G BIV!

What is this you ask?  Well think about the rainbow.  What colors do we observe when we see one.  Have you ever wondered why we see the colors we do?  My first graders got to explore first hand what happens when light passes through a prism.  We discovered how sunlight is made up of the colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and, Violet.  Check out the fun video and song about ROY G BIV by They Might Be Giants on Youtube :

Grade Two: Learning to observe using different POINTS OF VIEW

Have you ever hiked a mountain and looked down on the landscape below and used a bird's eye view?  Have you ever laid down on the grass and looked up at the clouds passing by, using an ant's view?  Have you tried looking closely at something with a magnifying glass and zoomed in?  These are all examples of observing/looking from different points of view.  Second graders have been learning how artist and photographers like to make their chosen subject for their art more interesting by using different points of view.  We created view finders and practiced zooming in on parts of the art room and then my daughters bike.

Grade Three:  Realistic vs. Abstract (not real looking art)
Yayoi Kusama pumpkins

Wow!  Her work is here to stay!   The ICA, (Institute for Contemporary Art right here in Boston) has just acquired "Love is Calling", and infinity room created by Yayoi Kusama.  Check out the link below to see an image of the infinity room and to learn a little more about
Love is Calling .

Grade Four: FALLing for TINTS AND SHADES!

Grade four has been busy demonstrating their understanding of the difference between GEOMETRIC and ORGANIC shapes and learning how to create TINTS AND SHADES when working with tempera paints.  Geometric shapes are what we think of using in math: squares, rectangles, quadrilaterals, triangles, basically shapes with straighter sides and sharp angles (man made).  Organic shapes are what we find naturally in nature such as: trees, leaves, pumpkins, and flowers.  To create a TINT, you add white to a color, making it LIGHTER.  To create a SHADE, you add black to a color, making it DARKER.

CAN YOU SPOT THE ORGANIC AND GEOMETRIC SHAPES?

HOW MANY DIFFERENT TINT AND SHADES DO YOU SEE IN EACH PAINTING?

Continue to check back to see what Golden Hill's PAX Eagles are up to as we head into the season of winter!

Remember, How will YOU make your mark today?
